Negative pronouns: nimeni, nimic, and niciun

Learn how Romanian distinguishes people, things, and noun phrases with nimeni, nimic, and niciun/nicio.

Romanian uses different negative forms for people, things, and noun phrases: nimeni means nobody, nimic means nothing, and niciun/nicio means no or not any before a singular noun. Romanian normally keeps nu with these words: Nu am văzut pe nimeni. (I did not see anybody.)

Which negative form refers to a person or a thing?

Use nimeni for people, nimic for things, actions, or states, and niciun/nicio before a noun that you name explicitly.

FormWhat it replacesExample
nimenia person or peopleNimeni nu răspunde. (Nobody is answering.)
nimica thing, action, or stateNu aud nimic. (I cannot hear anything.)
niciuna masculine or neuter singular nounNu am niciun mesaj. (I do not have any message.)
nicioa feminine singular nounNu am nicio întrebare. (I do not have any question.)

The first two are pronouns: they stand on their own. Niciun and nicio are pronominal determiners: they come before a noun and agree with its gender. For the broader family of non-specific forms, see indefinite pronouns.

What forms do nimeni and nimic have?

Nimeni has one nominative-accusative form and the genitive-dative form nimănui; nimeni has no plural. Nimic is invariable in its pronoun use, so it stays nimic in the core nominative-accusative patterns.

FormCase or useExample
nimeninominative or accusativeNu a venit nimeni. (Nobody came.)
nimănuigenitive-dativeNu răspund nimănui. (I do not answer anybody.)
al/a/ai/ale nimănuiindependent genitiveCâinele acesta este al nimănui. (This dog belongs to nobody.)
nimicnominative or accusative; invariableNimic nu s-a schimbat. (Nothing has changed.)
  • Use nimeni when the missing referent is human: Nu cunosc pe nimeni aici. (I do not know anybody here.)
  • Use nimic for an inanimate object or for an action or state: Nu vreau nimic. (I do not want anything.)
  • Use nimănui after a dative construction or preposition that calls for it: Nu-i spun nimănui secretul. (I do not tell anybody the secret.)
  • Use the genitive article before an independent nimănui: Al nimănui este câinele. (The dog belongs to nobody.) After the noun, the close phrase is câinele nimănui.

Why does nimeni take pe as a direct object?

In a neutral direct-object phrase, use pe nimeni for a person, but use bare nimic for a thing. The preposition pe belongs to the human direct-object pattern; it is not added to nimic.

MeaningRomanianWhy
I see nobody.Nu văd pe nimeni.nimeni replaces a human direct object, so use pe.
I see nothing.Nu văd nimic.nimic replaces a non-human direct object, so it is bare.
I am not thinking about anybody.Nu mă gândesc la nimeni. The preposition is selected by the verb phrase, not by nimeni alone.
I am not thinking about anything.Nu mă gândesc la nimic. The same preposition can introduce the invariable nimic.

Do not add a matching direct-object clitic to pe nimeni in this pattern. The neutral order is Nu am sunat pe nimeni. (I did not call anybody.); for contrastive fronting, use Pe nimeni nu am sunat. (Nobody did I call.), still without a clitic. The separate topic on Romanian object pronoun doubling covers the wider system.

Where do negative pronouns go in the sentence?

Place a negative pronoun after the verb in the most neutral order, or move it to the front for topic or focus; in both positions, keep nu with the finite verb.

PositionExampleMeaning
After the verbNu vine nimeni.Nobody is coming.
After the verb as objectNu am cumpărat nimic.I did not buy anything.
Fronted subjectNimeni nu vine.Nobody is coming.
Fronted objectNimic nu mă poate opri.Nothing can stop me.
Inside a subordinate clauseNu cred că vine nimeni.I do not think anybody is coming.

Why do these words appear with nu?

Romanian uses negative concord: a negative pronoun or determiner normally combines with nu in the same negative clause. Do not remove nu just because nimeni, nimic, or niciun already carries a negative meaning.

  • Nu e nimeni aici. means There is nobody here; Nimeni nu e aici. has the same negative meaning with a fronted subject.
  • Nu mi-a adus nimic. means He or she brought me nothing; the negative verb still has nu.
  • Nu a venit niciun student. means No student came; niciun does not replace the negative verb.
  • This article uses nu only where it supports these negative pronouns. The full placement and uses of sentence negation belong to Romanian negation with nu.

When do you use niciun and nicio?

Use one-word niciun before a masculine or neuter singular noun and nicio before a feminine singular noun; the noun remains unarticulated.

NounDeterminerExample
masculine singularniciunNu am niciun coleg aici. (I do not have any colleague here.)
neuter singularniciunNu am niciun răspuns. (I do not have any answer.)
feminine singularnicioNu am nicio idee. (I do not have any idea.)
genitive-dative singular, masculine or neuterniciunuiNu am răspuns niciunui mesaj. (I did not reply to any message.)
genitive-dative singular, feminineniciuneiNu am răspuns niciunei colege. (I did not reply to any female colleague.)
genitive-dative pluralniciunorNu am răspuns niciunor colegi. (I did not reply to any colleagues.)

When the form stands alone, use the independent pronoun series niciunul, niciuna, niciunii, and niciunele: Niciunul dintre colegi nu a venit. (None of the male colleagues came.) Niciuna dintre colege nu a venit. (None of the female colleagues came.) Its useful genitive-dative forms are niciunuia, niciuneia, and plural niciunora.

When is nici un or nici o written separately?

Write niciun/nicio as one word when it is the negative pronominal determiner meaning no or not any. Write nici un/nici o separately when nici is an adverb and un/o keeps its independent article or numeral meaning in a contrast.

One wordSeparate wordsMeaning
Nu am niciun bilet.N-am nici un bilet, nici două.no ticket / neither one ticket nor two
Nu am nicio soră.N-am nici o soră, nici mai multe.no sister / neither one sister nor several
Nu e niciun om aici.Nu e naiv și nu e nici un om incult.no person here / not an uneducated person either
  • Before an explicitly named singular noun, start with the one-word determiner: niciun elev, nicio elevă, niciun exercițiu.
  • For an independent referent, use the one-word pronoun: Nu aleg niciuna. (I am choosing none.)
  • Do not use niciun or nicio alone when a noun is understood; choose niciunul or niciuna instead.
  • Keep the negative verb: Niciunul nu a răspuns, not Niciunul a răspuns for the intended negative meaning.

What is the neutral form to use?

Use the forms above as neutral contemporary Standard Romanian. Nimeni, nimic, nimănui, niciun/nicio, and the related niciunul/niciuna forms are ordinary written and spoken choices; this article does not expand into regional, literary, or strongly conversational alternatives.

Mistakes to avoid

  • Do not use nimeni for a thing: say Nu am găsit nimic. (I found nothing.)
  • Do not use nimic for a person: say Nu am găsit pe nimeni. (I found nobody.)
  • Do not omit pe from the neutral human direct-object phrase pe nimeni.
  • Do not write nici un mesaj when you mean no message; write niciun mesaj. Use the spaced form only when the sentence genuinely means neither one nor another quantity or category.
  • Do not omit nu in ordinary negative-concord sentences: Nu vine nimeni, Nu văd nimic, and Nu a venit niciun coleg.
  1. Which form normally refers to nobody, no person?

    • nimic
    • nimeni
    • nicio
    • nimănui

Nimeni replaces a noun referring to a person. Nimic is for things, while nicio must come before a feminine singular noun and nimănui is a genitive-dative form.

  2. Which sentence means “I found nothing in the bag”?

    • Nu am găsit nimeni în geantă.
    • Nu am găsit nimănui în geantă.
    • Nu am găsit nicio în geantă.
    • Nu am găsit nimic în geantă.

Nimic is the invariable pronoun for a thing, and the negative verb keeps nu: Nu am găsit nimic în geantă.

  3. Choose the correctly written neutral sentence for “I do not have any question.”

    • Nu am nicio întrebare.
    • Nu am niciun întrebare.
    • Nu am nici o întrebare.
    • Nu am niciuna întrebare.

Întrebare is feminine singular, so the determiner is one-word nicio. The standalone pronoun niciuna cannot directly modify the noun.

  4. Which sentence means “Nothing can stop me”?

    • Nimeni nu mă poate opri.
    • Nimic mă poate opri.
    • Nimic nu mă poate opri.
    • Nu nimic mă poate opri.

The subject is a thing or force, so use nimic. Romanian negative concord also requires nu before the finite verb: Nimic nu mă poate opri.

  5. Which sentence correctly means “I did not tell anybody”?

    • Nu am spus nimeni.
    • Nu am spus nimic.
    • Nu am spus niciunui.
    • Nu am spus nimănui.

The person receiving the information is an indirect object, so use the genitive-dative form nimănui. Nimic would mean that you told nothing, and niciunui needs a noun such as coleg after it.
