Collective and invariable nouns

Learn how Romanian collective nouns affect agreement and how invariable nouns show number through their context.

Romanian has two distinct noun patterns: a singular collective noun can denote a set, while an invariable noun can keep the same bare form in the singular and plural. Compare plural agreement by meaning in Majoritatea studenților au răspuns. (Most of the students answered.) with the unchanged plural noun in doi unchi (two uncles).

What makes a Romanian noun collective or invariable?

A collective noun groups several entities under one grammatical noun. An invariable noun has singular and plural values with the same unarticulated form. Articles, numerals, and agreement still show the difference. For the broader mass-noun contrast, see mass and uncountable nouns.

Defective numberOnly singular or only plural in the ordinary useThere is no normal opposite number for that senselapte (milk), ochelari (glasses)

How do collective nouns control agreement?

When the collective is presented as one unit, use singular agreement. When a quantifying collective foregrounds its members, plural agreement by meaning is possible in the standard language.

ReadingAgreementExampleMeaning
One unitSingular verb and modifiersFamilia a ajuns obosită.The family arrived tired, treated as one unit.
Group as a unit with a member complementSingular is the neutral defaultUn grup de studenți a intrat în sală.A group of students entered the room as a group.
Members foregroundedPlural agreement by meaningO mulțime de oameni au protestat.A lot of people protested; the people are foregrounded.
Quantity noun with plural genitiveStandard Romanian accepts singular or pluralMajoritatea studenților a/au votat. Most of the students voted; singular follows form, plural follows meaning.

The distinction is about the structure and intended focus, not simply about whether the noun refers to more than one person. Familia and armata normally select singular agreement when they name a unified entity. A quantifying noun such as majoritatea (the majority) can take singular agreement with its grammatical form or plural agreement by meaning with the people being counted.

In neutral contemporary Standard Romanian, agreement with majoritatea and cea mai mare parte (most of, the greater part of) may be singular or plural when a plural genitive names the members: Majoritatea colegilor a/au votat. This is accepted agreement by form or meaning, not a regional or careless variant. With familie, armată, or echipaj presented as a single entity, singular remains the unmarked choice.

How do you read an invariable noun?

Keep the bare noun unchanged, then let the numeral, article, demonstrative, adjective, and sentence context identify its number.

NounSingularPluralDefinite forms
Masculine unchiun unchi (one uncle)doi unchi (two uncles)singular unchiul; plural unchii
Masculine ochi (eye)un ochi (one eye)doi ochi (two eyes)singular ochiul; plural ochii
Neuter numeun nume (one name)două nume (two names)numele can be singular or plural
Feminine învățătoareo învățătoare (one female teacher)două învățătoare (two female teachers)singular învățătoarea; plural învățătoarele

Determiners and verb agreement show the number contrast. Compare Acest unchi locuiește aici. (This uncle lives here.) with Acești unchi locuiesc aici. (These uncles live here.) The numeral supplies the same information in Am două nume pe listă. (I have two names on the list.) Here două marks the plural even though the bare noun has the same form as singular nume.

Why can ochi be ochi or ochiuri?

The spelling ochi belongs to more than one noun entry. In the body-part sense it is masculine and has the unchanged plural ochi; in several object or food-related senses it is neuter and has the plural ochiuri.

SenseSingularPluralExample
Eye or lookun ochidoi ochiAm ochii obosiți. (My eyes are tired.)
Opening or pool of waterun ochidouă ochiuriAm văzut două ochiuri de apă. (I saw two pools of water.)

Do not assume that every noun ending in -i is invariable, or that every occurrence of ochi has the same gender and plural. For a rare loanword, a meaning-sensitive homonym, or a disputed plural, check the individual DOOM3 entry rather than extending a spelling pattern.

  1. What does familie show in Familia a ajuns la timp. (The family arrived on time.)?

    • It is singular in grammar and denotes a group treated as a unit.
    • It is plural because it denotes several people.
    • It is invariable because its bare spelling never changes.
    • It is defective because it exists only in the plural.

Familie is collective here: the noun has singular form and singular agreement, while its meaning includes several people treated as one family unit.

  2. Complete the sentence: Am doi ___ în Brașov. (I have two uncles in Brașov.)

    • unchiul
    • unchi
    • unchii
    • unchilor

Unchi keeps the same bare form in singular and plural, so the plural numeral doi gives doi unchi. Unchii is the definite plural, and unchiul is definite singular.

  3. Complete the plural phrase: Am două ___ pe listă. (I have two names on the list.)

    • nume
    • numuri
    • numele
    • numi

Neuter nume has the same bare form in singular and plural. After două, use the unarticulated plural nume; numele is definite, and numuri and numi are not forms of this noun.

  4. Which sentence means “I have two tired eyes”?

    • Am două ochiuri obosite.
    • Am doi ochi obosiți.
    • Am doi ochii obosiți.
    • Am două ochi obosiți.

For the body-part sense, ochi is masculine with the unchanged plural ochi, so the phrase is doi ochi obosiți. Ochiuri belongs to other senses, and ochii is definite.

  5. Which statement about Majoritatea studenților a/au votat. (Most of the students voted.) is correct?

    • Only a votat is standard because majoritatea is singular.
    • Only au votat is standard because studenților is plural.
    • Both are accepted: singular follows the collective noun's form, while plural follows the members' meaning.
    • Neither is correct because a collective noun cannot be a subject.

Current Standard Romanian allows both readings with majoritatea and a plural genitive: singular agreement follows the grammatical form of the collective, and plural agreement follows the people being counted.
