Adjective position before and after the noun

Learn when Romanian adjectives normally follow the noun and when they can come before it for emphasis.

In neutral Romanian, a descriptive adjective usually follows the noun: o carte interesantă (an interesting book). Romanian can also put the adjective before the noun when the speaker wants emphasis or a more expressive effect.

Where does the adjective normally go?

Start with noun + adjective: the adjective follows the noun and agrees with it in gender and number; this is the neutral, dependable order for everyday Standard Romanian. Review Romanian adjective agreement for the adjective form.

Noun phraseOrderMeaning
un film bunnoun + adjectivea good film
o idee bunănoun + adjectivea good idea
filmul bunnoun + adjectivethe good film
ideea bunănoun + adjectivethe good idea

Position does not replace agreement. In o idee bună (a good idea), bună is feminine singular because it describes idee. In două idei bune (two good ideas), bune is feminine plural; see adjective form patterns for the common patterns.

When can the adjective come before the noun?

Pre-position is correct, but it is usually marked: it can add emphasis, emotion, or an expressive tone. It is especially natural in exclamations, while noun + adjective remains the neutral starting point.

  • Use the neutral order for an ordinary description: o zi frumoasă (a beautiful day).
  • Use the preposed order for emphasis: o frumoasă zi (a beautiful day, with emphasis on beautiful).
  • In an exclamation, both orders can occur, but the effect differs: Ce zi frumoasă! (What a beautiful day!) is neutral in its question word, while Frumoasă zi! (Beautiful day!) puts strong focus on the adjective.

What happens to the article?

With an indefinite article, un, o, or niște stays before the whole phrase. With a definite noun phrase, the definite article is attached to the first word: the noun in noun-first order, but the adjective in adjective-first order. See the Romanian definite article and Romanian indefinite articles.

Neutral orderPreposed orderMeaning
o zi frumoasăo frumoasă zia beautiful day
ziua frumoasăfrumoasa zithe beautiful day
studentul bunbunul studentthe good student

Notice the definite article in frumoasa zi and bunul student: it is attached to the adjective because the adjective comes first. The adjective still agrees with the noun; only the position and the article placement change.

Which adjectives have special position patterns?

A few adjectives are strongly associated with one position. Cojocaru describes biet (poor, unfortunate) as preposed: un biet câine (a poor dog) and bietul câine (the poor dog). Invariable color adjectives such as roz are used after the noun: o rochie roz (a pink dress) and două rochii roz (two pink dresses). Learn these as adjective-specific patterns, not as a rule for every adjective.

Mistakes to avoid

  • Do not treat pre-position as the everyday default: begin with cartea bună (the good book), not buna carte, unless you intend emphasis or a marked expression.
  • Do not leave the definite article on the noun when the adjective comes first: frumoasa zi, not ziua frumoasă, when you mean the preposed order.
  • Do not change the adjective's agreement when you move it. The forms are o casă frumoasă and o frumoasă casă, not o frumos casă.
  • Do not add an ending to an invariable adjective such as roz: use rochii roz, not an invented plural form.
  1. Which phrase uses the neutral noun-first order for “an interesting book”?

    • o interesantă carte
    • o carte interesantă
    • interesantă carte!
    • o carte interesante

The neutral order is noun + adjective: o carte interesantă. The other phrases put the adjective first, use an expressive order, or use the wrong adjective agreement.

  2. Which phrase has the adjective before a definite noun?

    • ziua frumoasă
    • o frumoasă zi
    • frumoasa zi
    • frumoasă zi

In frumoasa zi, the adjective frumoasa comes before the noun and carries the definite article. Ziua frumoasă is the noun-first order, while the other two are indefinite or lack the needed article.

  3. Choose the neutral completion: Am cumpărat ___. (I bought a beautiful dress.)

    • o frumoasă rochie
    • o rochie frumos
    • o rochie frumoase
    • o rochie frumoasă

For a neutral description, use noun + adjective: o rochie frumoasă. The adjective is feminine singular because rochie is feminine singular.

  4. You want the neutral noun-first form of “the good student.” Which sentence is correct?

    • Bunul student învață.
    • Studentul bun învață.
    • Studentul bune învață.
    • Student bunul învață.

The neutral noun-first phrase is studentul bun. Bunul student is a possible preposed, marked order, but it is not the requested neutral order.

  5. Which phrase follows the standard post-noun pattern for the invariable adjective roz?

    • două rochii roze
    • două roz rochii
    • două rochii roz
    • două rochii rozi

Roz is an invariable adjective in current Standard Romanian, so it stays roz and follows the noun: două rochii roz.
